What is the Purpose of College?
Answering this question is not an easy task and I know for certain that I do not have the whole answer. Sometimes I like to ask the same question, but in return, I have few reasons as to what is the purpose of college. However, I think I may have learned a thing or to from a vlog that I watched a couple of months ago from the vlogbrothers. The vlogbrothers consist of Hank and John Green and they pretty much just teach people everything about everything-- pop culture, social skills, and advice on people suffering from existential crises. John Green is one of my favorite modern novelist who has written two really amazing books called Finding Alaska and the Fault in Our Stars. In this video he touches on whether or not college is worth it. Through watching this video, I've learned that, like most things in life, college is worth it depending on what you make of it. If you go into college doing things you don't feel passionate about, learning things that don't inspire you, or keeping yourself from having a good time, then college, especially an expensive one, is not worth it. Economically, going to college may not completely make as much sense as it did 30 years ago, but to be honest, what's money if you don't have happiness? Say that someone goes into economics just so that he/she can make tons of money, but actually hates economics and wants to learn art history, then maybe college wasn't so worth it if you're not happy. So, all in all, if you don't want to go to college in hopes to experience new things or have a career that you will love for the rest of your life, then maybe college isn't worth it. And for that to hold any stigma at all is absurd.
Here's the video if any of you want to watch it!

I really like the claims you make here but unfortunately although college may not be for everyone, everyone has to force themselves to go in order to survive in the future. Nowadays even at mcdonalds the man with a college degree will get a job first.
ReplyDeleteI agree, times are changing! College is pretty much expected of high school students unless they plan to go to maybe a trade school to learn a specific trade, or maybe cosmetology school or something of the sort. And Malorie maked a really good point about McDonald's, so true!
ReplyDeleteI agree with the notion that college is what you make it to be. I realize that college isn't becoming an option because of job security and stuff but I think that you should make the most of it while at college because you are paying that much money.
