How could he be surprised at the "controversy" he created when he is well aware that this is a newer more modern issue. Many younger people who are "tech-savvy," if you will, have strong opinions as to why the internet is a positive tool. People from older generations, on the other hand, value books more highly. Clearly internet use and its effects is a big issue.
